Home Upgrade Academy
Practical Design, Smarter Homes, and Renovation Wisdom—Built on Real Experience
Welcome to Home Upgrade Academy
If you’re here, you probably care about your home — not just how it looks, but how it functions, adds value, and supports everyday life.
You may be:
- planning a renovation
- upgrading a kitchen or bathroom
- learning DIY skills
- Exploring smart home automation
- improving a home for resale
- or simply wanting to make better decisions before spending money
Home Upgrade Academy was created for people like you — homeowners, DIYers, renovators, and practical thinkers who want clear guidance, real-world insight, and mistake-avoiding wisdom 🛠️🏡
This is not a glossy design blog.
It’s not a trend-chasing DIY channel.
And it’s not theory written by people who’ve never built or renovated a home.
This platform is built on decades of hands-on experience, engineering discipline, project management thinking, and a deep respect for how homes are actually built, upgraded, and lived in.
Our Mission
Our mission is to help homeowners make confident, informed decisions when upgrading, renovating, or improving their homes.
We do this by providing:
- practical interior design guidance
- smart home and automation insights
- step-by-step renovation frameworks
- clear DIY tutorials
- honest tools and guides
- and cost-versus-value thinking
We aim to reduce costly mistakes, lower renovation stress, and increase long-term value — whether that value is financial, functional, or lifestyle-based.
Why Home Upgrade Academy Exists
Most people renovate or upgrade a home only a few times in their lives.
That means:
- Every decision feels expensive
- Mistakes are costly
- Advice is often conflicting.
- and “expert opinions” don’t always align with reality
We created Home Upgrade Academy to bridge the gap between:
- professional building knowledge
- and real homeowner needs
This site exists so you don’t have to learn everything the hard way.
Meet Johan de Lange — Engineer, Builder, Project Manager
I’m Johan, founder of Home Upgrade Academy.
By training, I’m an electrical engineer, specializing in instrumentation measurement, control, and automation, with many years of professional experience.
Engineering taught me how to:
- analyze systems
- understand cause and effect
- manage risk
- Read plans properly
- and think long-term
But my journey into home building and renovation didn’t stop at theory.
Building From the Ground Up
Using my engineering background and project management experience, I personally:
- built two homes from the ground up for our own family
- Then, I went on to project manage ten additional homes for family and friends who requested my help
These weren’t abstract projects — they involved:
- budgeting
- contractor coordination
- design revisions
- compliance checks
- material decisions
- on-site problem-solving
- and real accountability
Every build taught new lessons — about planning, sequencing, communication, and the difference between what looks good and what actually works.
Formal Building Qualifications
What started as a “serious hobby” quickly became a structured pursuit of excellence.
Along the way, I:
- completed a Diploma in National Home Building Regulations
- formally registered as a builder
- immersed myself in compliance, standards, and best practices
This combination — engineering, project management, and formal building knowledge — is the foundation of Home Upgrade Academy.
It means the guidance here is:
- technically sound
- regulation-aware
- and grounded in real builds, not assumptions

Her approach to design is:
- practical
- people-centered
- timeless rather than trendy
She believes great design should:
- reduce stress

- and feel natural to live in
Much of Home Upgrade Academy’s interior design philosophy reflects her influence — balancing beauty with usability.
Our Combined Perspective
Together, we bring a rare blend of skills:
- engineering logic
- project management discipline
- hands-on building experience
- and interior design sensibility
That means we look at home upgrades holistically:
- structure + systems
- aesthetics + durability
- budget + return on investment
- comfort + future-proofing
This balance is what makes Home Upgrade Academy different.
